Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis is a military simulation developed by Bohemia Interactive and published by Codemasters in 2001. Blending first-person shooter action with deep simulation elements, the game drops players into a fictional conflict on a group of East European islands. Players control a member of the US Army, engaging in a wide-ranging campaign that spans infantry combat, special operations, and vehicle warfare including tanks, helicopters, and jeeps. Renowned for its open-ended mission design, massive terrain, and realistic ballistics, Operation Flashpoint allows objectives to be completed in multiple ways, from direct assaults to silent infiltrations. The AI is notable for its autonomy and tactical awareness; both squadmates and enemies use cover, flank, and react to events dynamically. The game also features an extensive multiplayer mode for both cooperative and competitive play, though the interface for finding games was limited at launch. An expansion pack, Red Hammer, adds a second campaign from the Soviet perspective. Operation Flashpoint was praised for its ambition and scope, setting a new standard for infantry simulation and influencing the genre for years to come.
