Panzer Commander is a World War II tank simulation released in 1998 for Windows 95 by Strategic Simulations, Inc. (SSI). The game puts the player in command of a three-tank platoon during historical battles across Europe, Russia, and North Africa. The player can take the role of German, Russian, British, or American forces in single scenarios, or lead a German or Russian platoon through one of six linear campaigns that follow the unit's actual wartime movements. The game features both single-player and multiplayer modes: LAN and TCP/IP play support deathmatch and capture-the-flag, but lack cooperative campaign play. A built-in mission editor allows players to create custom scenarios and campaigns, extending the game's life. The 3D engine, optimized for then-current accelerators like 3dfx Voodoo and PowerVR PCX2, renders detailed tanks, terrain with elevation that affects speed and protection, and effects such as recoil, smoke, and explosions. The crew reacts to the environment and speaks in native languages (German or Russian). While praised for its graphics and accessible command interface, Panzer Commander was criticized for static campaign structures, repetitive enemy AI, and unreliable platoon pathfinding. A v1.1 patch was released to address some AI issues but arrived after the initial reviews.
