Pirate101
Pirate101 is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online game developed and published by KingsIsle Entertainment, launched in 2012 for Windows and macOS. A pirate-themed companion to the studio's hugely successful wizard-school MMO Wizard101, it shares that game's family-friendly, accessible design and bright, cartoonish art style while building an entirely new setting: the Spiral, a fantastical universe of floating skyways where players captain their own ships and lead a crew of swashbuckling companions. Departing from Wizard101's card-based dueling, Pirate101 features turn-based tactical combat on a grid, more akin to a strategy game, in which players direct their pirate and a roster of recruited companions, each with distinct classes and abilities, against enemies. Players also engage in skyway ship battles, explore varied themed worlds, complete a humorous story-driven questline and customise their pirate, ship and crew. Designed for younger players and families, it is supported by optional memberships and microtransactions in a safe online environment. Well received within its niche, Pirate101 was praised for its engaging tactical combat, charm and rich world, and it built a devoted community alongside its sister title. It remains a long-running, kid-friendly MMO and a distinctive entry in KingsIsle's family-oriented online catalogue. It continued to receive updates and retained a loyal community alongside its sister title Wizard101 for many years.
