Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Resident Evil: Code Veronica is a survival horror game developed and published by Capcom, originally released for the Sega Dreamcast in February 2000. It is the first mainline Resident Evil title to debut on a non-PlayStation platform, and it holds a specific place in the series timeline: a direct continuation of Resident Evil 2, following Claire Redfield as she searches for her brother Chris after the events in Raccoon City.
The game was notable at the time for its fully 3D pre-rendered backgrounds and real-time camera work, a significant technical departure from the fixed-camera approach of the earlier numbered entries. The story unfolds across Rockfort Island and an Antarctic research facility, with Claire and Chris eventually reuniting to confront the Ashford family antagonists.
An expanded version, Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, was released for PlayStation 2 in 2001 and later ported to GameCube and Xbox 360. Despite being marketed as a side-story due to the absence of a number in the title, Code Veronica is widely considered a mainline entry, and its storyline is directly relevant to the events of Resident Evil 5.
The game was developed by Capcom Production Studio 4, with Hiroki Katō directing. It was produced with a relatively large budget for a Dreamcast title, and its release helped establish the console as a credible platform for third-party survival horror. A remake, titled Resident Evil Veronica, was announced at Summer Game Fest 2026 and is targeting a 2027 release.
