About This Game

Rune is a 2000 third-person action game developed by Human Head Studios and published by Gathering of Developers. Set in the world of Norse mythology, players control Ragnar, a young Viking warrior, as he battles through hordes of zombies, crabs, and rival Vikings across caverns, fortresses, and the realm of Hel. Built on a modified Unreal Tournament engine, the game emphasizes fast-paced hack-and-slash combat over character progression or complex stats. Weapons include axes, swords, and hammers, each with a unique rune power ability. The single-player campaign spans three episodes of roughly 15–20 hours, punctuated by cinematic cutscenes and an evocative orchestral soundtrack inspired by Wagner. A multiplayer deathmatch mode was also included. Upon release, Rune received praise for its visuals, setting, and raw combat feel, but criticism for shallow mechanics, limited enemy variety, and occasional technical bugs. It remains a cult favorite among fans of pure action games.
