S.C.A.R.S., an acronym for Super Computer Animal Racing Simulation, is a futuristic combat racing game developed by Vivid Image and published by Ubisoft in 1998. Players control animal-shaped vehicles armed with an array of weapons, racing through colorful, twisting tracks. The game requires a 3D accelerator (Glide or Direct3D) and features six distinct cars, each with unique attributes such as speed, acceleration, grip, armor, and weapon power. Track conditions like snow affect handling, and the difficulty ramps quickly, forcing strategic vehicle selection. Weapons include seekers that home in on opponents, boomerangs that orbit the player before attacking, and time bombs that detonate after a countdown. Multiplayer is limited to split-screen on a single machine. Despite a campy story and no network support, S.C.A.R.S. delivered a budget-priced alternative to mascot kart racers, emphasizing aggressive weapon use and arcade thrills.
