Snow Wave Avalanche
Snow Wave Avalanche is a snowboarding racing and extreme jumping game developed by Hammer Technologies of Spain and published by Intense Entertainment. Released in 1999 for Windows 95/98, it was one of the earliest PC titles dedicated to the sport, offering four event types: Bordercross Racing (a downhill race with checkpoints), Big Jump (a single massive leap scored on distance and style), Big Jump Racing (a series of jumps against clock and opponents), and X-treme Tour (a multi-discipline campaign). Players choose from four snowboarders, each with balance and agility stats and three outfit variations. The game supports up to four players over a LAN connection.
Snow Wave Avalanche was designed to run directly from the CD-ROM without any hard drive installation, a deliberate departure from the large installs common at the time. It requires a Pentium 100 MHz or faster, 16 MB of RAM, a DirectX-compatible SVGA video card, and a 4X CD-ROM drive. For optimal visuals, a 3dfx Voodoo or Direct3D accelerator is recommended; the game employs textured polygons with perspective correction, bilinear filtering, z-buffering, lens flares, mist effects, and dynamic lighting, targeting 30 frames per second on period hardware. A force feedback joystick is supported, though the default controls are not reconfigurable.
The game's release was marred by several technical issues. The setup utility, intended to configure video hardware, often failed to launch automatically, leaving users with a grey, untextured display. Sound effects frequently did not initialize on common sound cards, and the title could crash the system's audio subsystem, requiring a reboot. Further, the game lacked a retry or save feature; failing an event returned the player to the initial menu, forcing a full re-selection of mode and character each time. These problems, combined with a minimal course selection (one per mode), overshadowed what was otherwise a visually impressive early 3D-accelerated sports title.
