Beautiful racing with zero staying power.
Snowmobile Racing looks great and feels solid, but four tracks, no multiplayer, and a complete lack of challenge capsize a promising ride.
About This Game

Snowmobile Racing is a 1999 snowmobile and ATV racing simulation developed by Second South Studios and published by GT Interactive. The game puts players on four distinct tracks set across Minnesota, Iowa, Maine, and Yellowstone National Park. Players can choose between a snowmobile and an ATV, with the ATV offering tighter handling despite the same top speed. Races consist of five laps against four computer-controlled opponents or solo time trials. There is no multiplayer of any kind.

The racing engine favors a forgiving arcade feel over strict realism: vehicles accelerate up steep slopes, mid-air direction changes work without consequence, and crashes are rare and barely impact race outcomes. Despite those simplifications, the game delivers a polished visual presentation. Track details include reflective ice on the Minnesota course, a barn with Holstein cows and a John Deere tractor in Iowa, steam-shooting geysers in Yellowstone, and a short, curving Maine coastal track. The snow and mud particle effects are a standout, often obscuring the rider and forcing split-second decisions.

Snowmobile Racing requires a Windows 95/98 PC with a Direct3D-compatible graphics card. Installation uses under 30 MB of hard drive space and includes DirectX 6 on the CD. The manual is minimal and, notably, fails to mention the ATV at all. The game retailed for $19.99 and is no longer widely available outside of second-hand copies.
