About This Game

Sonic the Hedgehog is a 1991 platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by SEGA, originally for the SEGA Mega Drive (Genesis), and one of the most important and influential titles in video-game history. Created to serve as SEGA's flagship franchise and mascot to rival Nintendo's Mario, it introduced Sonic, a blue, super-fast hedgehog who races through vibrant, loop-filled levels collecting golden rings and battling the rotund villain Dr. Robotnik (Eggman), who has trapped animals inside his robotic minions. The game distinguished itself with a then-revolutionary emphasis on speed and momentum, sending Sonic blazing through sloping, spring-laden stages designed to flow and accelerate, a sharp contrast to the more methodical platformers of the day. A commercial and cultural phenomenon, it helped SEGA challenge Nintendo's dominance during the 16-bit console wars and launched one of gaming's most enduring and beloved franchises, spanning dozens of sequels, spin-offs, television shows and films across more than three decades. Its bright design, iconic music and charismatic hero made Sonic an instantly recognisable global icon. Endlessly re-released and remade, the original Sonic the Hedgehog remains a foundational classic, a defining work of the Mega Drive era and a cornerstone of SEGA's identity. It launched one of gaming's most enduring franchises, spanning dozens of games, animated series and major Hollywood films.

Sega ruled the early nineties on the back of Sonic, so how did it end up here, with a hyped 'AAA' Aliens game selling barely a million copies?
