The Tone Rebellion is a real-time strategy game developed by The Logic Factory and published by Virgin Interactive in 1997. Set in a dreamlike world, it centers on the Floaters, ethereal creatures who once lived in harmony using a mystical substance called "tone" for construction, magic, and expansion. When a Leviathan drains the tone and nearly exterminates the Floaters, the survivors hibernate and emerge as four distinct clans, Dyla, Zygons, Cepheans, and Tarks, each with unique abilities, structures, and spells. The player chooses a clan and begins the slow process of reclaiming territory from the Leviathan. Gameplay unfolds on a side-scrolling plane, eliminating vertical navigation. Starting on a single island, the player builds structures, trains warrior floaters in dojos, and pushes back against Leviathan spores and vermin. Expanding territory uncovers artifacts; placing these in designated mystic sites unlocks new powers and progresses the narrative. Bridges between islands become available as special key artifacts are found. The final stage requires the player to place all artifacts, awaken a chosen one, and journey to the Leviathan's lair to shatter its seals using glyphs matched to those on the home stone. Resource management is light but integral: tone must be harvested and distributed to keep warriors charged and territory growing. The game is notable for its unhurried pace, aesthetic of floating islands and soft colors, and an adaptive clan system that encourages replayability. Despite its real-time strategy label, The Tone Rebellion feels more like a tactical puzzle-adventure, with less emphasis on base building and more on exploration and artifact discovery.
