Blade of Darkness
Blade of Darkness is a 2001 third-person action game developed by Rebel Act Studios and published by Codemasters. Set in a dark fantasy world, the game lets players choose from four distinct characters, a knight, an amazon, a barbarian, and a dwarf, each with unique fighting styles, combo moves, and equipment restrictions. The single-player campaign spans diverse environments, from sun-baked deserts and frozen peaks to crypts and hellish landscapes, all rendered with a grim, consistent aesthetic. The story draws on Zoroastrian mythology and is delivered through in-engine cutscenes. The game is renowned for its advanced physics engine, real-time lighting and shadows, and a detailed dismemberment system that allows limbs to be severed during combat. Melee combat uses a lock-on system with blocking, dodging, and character-specific combos that unlock with experience. Enemies include orcs, skeletons, ghouls, minotaurs, and powerful spellcasters, each with distinct behaviors. Multiplayer supports deathmatch and arena modes via direct IP connection, but network performance was widely criticized. Upon release, Blade of Darkness received praise for its technical achievements and deep combat, though some faulted its steep learning curve and interface quirks. It has since gained a cult following as a benchmark for melee action.
