POCG VERDICT
Three heroes, one legend, and a messy map, but the Suikoden magic survives.
Suikoden III swaps the open world map for a menu of dots and splits the story across three protagonists, but the soul of the series is intact. A worthy successor that frustrates as much as it fascinates.
About This Game

Suikoden III is a role-playing game developed and published by Konami for the PlayStation 2. Released in 2002, it is the third main entry in the Suikoden series and the first on the sixth-generation console. The game eschews the single-protagonist structure of its predecessors in favor of the Trinity System, which follows three main characters, Hugo of the Karaya Clan, Chris Lightfellow of the Knights of Zexen, and Geddoe of the Harmonian Southern Frontier Defense Force, across interweaving storylines. The narrative revolves around the legend of the Flame Champion, a figure whose True Fire Rune carries both salvation and destruction, and a conspiracy that threatens the Grasslands. Players name the Flame Champion at the start, and each hero's chapter builds toward a convergence that unites the cast in a fight against a returning antagonist from earlier games.

Gameplay retains series staples: six-character parties, turn-based combat with rune magic, army-scale battles, and a large cast of 108 recruitable Stars of Destiny. The Trinity System, however, forces players to switch between leads chapter by chapter, each with independent inventories, parties, and progression. The world map is presented as a selection of linked points rather than an open field, removing traditional random encounters in favor of scripted encounters at destinations. Connectivity with Suikoden II saves allows imported data to unlock bonuses. Suikoden III was praised for its ambitious storytelling and character development, though its fragmented structure and world map design drew a mixed reception from series veterans.
