POCG VERDICT
The RPG that proved an army of 108 is better than a party of 4.
Suikoden's 108 recruitable characters, castle building, and emotional army-building hooked me from the first Blockbuster rental, and never let go.
About This Game

Suikoden is a role-playing game developed and published by Konami for the Sony PlayStation, first released in Japan in 1995 and North America in December 1996. Based loosely on the Chinese classic *The Water Margin*, the game follows the son of a military general who gradually becomes the leader of a rebellion against a corrupt empire, wielding the powerful and dangerous Soul-Eater Rune. The game is renowned for its massive roster of 108 recruitable characters, although only about three-quarters of them can join your active six-person battle party; the rest serve as support, shopkeepers, or narrative fixtures. As you recruit allies, your headquarters evolves from a small castle into a sprawling fortress filled with services, side activities, and countless personal stories. Combat uses turn-based mechanics with weapon sharpening (leveling weapons up to 16), rune-based magic, and special combination attacks unlocked by gathering characters with relationships or shared backgrounds. Large-scale war skirmishes pit your entire army against opposing forces using a rock-paper-scissors tactical system, with permadeath raising the stakes. Suikoden is celebrated for its deep storytelling, memorable soundtrack, and the staggering sense of scale that would lay the foundation for a beloved series.
