Total Annihilation is a real-time strategy game developed by Cavedog Entertainment and published by GT Interactive for Windows 95 in 1999. Set in a galaxy-wide conflict between the CORE (a race of uploaded consciousnesses) and the ARM (their rebellious human counterparts), players command massive armies of land, air, and sea units. The game stands out for its fully 3D rendered units that move and fight with physical realism, turrets recoil, planes bank, and ships create wakes. With over 150 unique units, the gameplay emphasizes strategic unit composition and terrain use rather than brute force. Resource management eschews traditional harvesting: metal extractors on deposits and various energy generators (solar, wind, tidal, geothermal) provide steady income, which can be stockpiled. The Commander unit is a powerful D-Gun-wielding robot that can cloak and, when destroyed, triggers a massive nuclear explosion. Total Annihilation introduced advanced features like shift-queuing orders, configurable unit AI (hold fire, fire at will, maneuver), fog of war, and veteran units that improve with kills. Two single-player campaigns each offer 25 missions across varied planetary environments, while multiplayer supports up to 10 players over IPX, TCP/IP, or LAN. The game runs on any Windows 95 PC with a Pentium 100 and 16MB RAM, requiring no 3D accelerator. Its orchestral soundtrack and detailed sound effects enhance the atmosphere. Total Annihilation received critical acclaim for its innovative graphics and deep gameplay, and it remains a beloved classic. A map editor was later released, and two expansion packs, The Core Contingency and Battle Tactics, added new units and missions.
