About This Game

Zool - Majyū Charmer Legend is a 1999 monster-taming role-playing game developed by Pandora Box and published by Imagineer for the Nintendo 64. It was originally announced as a 64DD title under the name in Zuul, but eventually shipped as a standard cartridge release.

The game follows a young orphan whose life changes after a chance encounter with a magical beast, setting him on a quest to become a legendary beast tamer. Its narrative is split into two arcs: an A-plot centered on found family and a B-plot that leans into shonen-style charmer action. Gameplay alternates between exploring towns (navigated with a cursor to talk to NPCs and visit shops) and traversing overworlds and dungeons where the player fights and collects monsters. Unlike Pokémon, Zool does not feature monster evolution, and the ending changes minimally based on collection progress, so there is little incentive to catch every creature.

Zool never received an official English release, leaving it inaccessible to Western audiences for decades. In 2026, a fan translation patch by Zoinkity, whowasphone404, and Gabbu Hetchy made the game fully playable in English, finally opening up one of the N64's oddest RPGs to a wider audience.
