Midway Wolf Unit MiSTer Core Plays NBA Hangtime and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3

A new MiSTer FPGA core plays NBA Hangtime and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on MiSTer FPGA hardware. More Midway Wolf Unit titles are on the way, and the developer is pushing back against AI-use rumors.

NBA Hangtime

FPGA developer blahm1d has released a MiSTer core for Midway’s Wolf Unit arcade board, making NBA Hangtime and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 playable with hardware recreation. Pixel Cherry Ninja reports that the rest of the board’s library will follow, including Mortal Kombat 3, WWF WrestleMania, NHL: 2-on-2 Open Ice Challenge, NBA Maximum Hangtime, and Rampage World Tour.

Some people have gotten caught up in blahm1d’s use of GenAI imagery and ‘use AI unabashedly here’ wording created confusion around the release. blahm1d also posted a completely not-entirely-serious Patreon statement about AI use. He is obviously talking very tongue in cheek and sarcastically.

Whatever noise surrounds it, the core is real and running on actual hardware. A preservation feat many assumed was impossible is now booting games on a MiSTer. That’s the whole point of FPGA preservation; getting the things that were supposed to stay dead back into play.
