Pokemon Red and Blue are role-playing games developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy, released in Japan in 1996 and in North America in 1998. The player takes on the role of a young trainer who captures, trains, and battles creatures called Pokemon across the Kanto region, aiming to defeat gym leaders, thwart the criminal Team Rocket, and complete a catalog of 151 species. Its defining innovation was social and physical: the two versions each contained creatures the other did not, and completing the Pokedex was impossible without connecting to another player over the Game Boy Link Cable to trade, which turned a solo adventure into a schoolyard and neighborhood event. Released late in the original Game Boy's life and rendered in monochrome, it nonetheless became a global phenomenon and launched one of the highest-grossing media franchises in the world. Its arrival is inseparable from the culture around it: the summer of trading on someone's porch, the endlessly repeated playground rumor about a hidden Mew, and the hunt to catch them all. For a generation, it was the defining portable summer, a game you played on your own but could only finish with a friend and a cable stretched between two handhelds.
