Brick Boy’s DMG-01 screen shader lands on the Analogue Pocket

A Brickboy core is now on the Analogue Pocket, bringing fugudaro's obsessive DMG-01 LCD recreation, blur, panel grain, dead lines and all, to real hardware.

Brick Boy's DMG-01 screen shader lands on the Analogue Pocket

There is a Brickboy core available for the Analogue Pocket now, which means one of the most obsessive recreations of the original Game Boy screen is running on real handheld hardware instead of just a browser tab. Brick Boy is the work of Japanese indie developer fugudaro (also going by kathoc), and it started life as a browser-based emulator built to copy the DMG-01’s pea-soup LCD as closely as anyone has bothered to.

The whole point is the screen. The original Game Boy display blurred, washed out in low light, and had that greenish tint everyone either loves or has made peace with, and it turns out that look is harder to fake than you would think. Fugudaro measured close-up images of actual LCD modules to reproduce the grain of the reflective panel behind the liquid crystal (he compares its fine pattern to washi paper), on top of the usual blur and pixel-grid effects. There is even a mode that simulates the polarising film rotting away, the failure that turns old screens into a spreading black mess. The Analogue Pocket update adds simulated ‘dead lines,’ the vertical gaps that creep across aging DMG-1 units as they age.

The screen is the last thing most emulators get wrong. You can nail the CPU timing and the audio and still be staring at crisp, backlit pixels that never once existed on the hardware you are trying to honor, and for monochrome Game Boy games that difference is most of the feel. Getting this level of display accuracy onto the Pocket closes a real gap. The catch worth flagging: fugudaro says he is using AI to automate parts of the Game Boy development work, which is a live argument in this scene right now. The shader has also been ported to RetroArch, and the original browser version is still there to try.
