Castlevania with a samurai twist, if Castlevania kicked your teeth in on stage two.
Kenseiden brings the Castlevania vibe to feudal Japan with stellar graphics and crushing difficulty, but stiff controls hold it back.
About This Game

Kenseiden is a side-scrolling action platformer released by Sega for the Master System in 1989. Set in feudal Japan, the game puts you in the sandals of Hayato, a samurai on a quest to defeat an army of demons and reclaim stolen sacred scrolls. The gameplay draws heavy inspiration from Konami's Castlevania, trading whips for katanas and gothic horror for Japanese mythology. As you progress through the stages, you can find hidden rooms that teach Hayato new sword techniques, which are essential for surviving the game's brutal difficulty. The game is also notable for pushing the Master System hardware, utilizing the system's larger color palette to create vibrant sprites and detailed backgrounds that stood out from the competition at the time. It also received a port on the Game Gear, though the smaller screen real estate changes the experience slightly.

How to Play TodayYour options for running this game in 2026
Original Hardware
Track down the standard Sega Master System cartridge to experience those vibrant colors on a CRT. Collectors might also want to hunt down the Game Gear port, though the smaller screen cuts off a lot of the visual flair.
Modern Re-release
Available on the Nintendo Switch as part of the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Classics collection. You can also grab it on Steam via the SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics hub, which runs great and supports save states you will absolutely need.
Emulation / Other Options
Grab a Mega EverDrive Pro. It plays Master System ROMs perfectly on original Genesis hardware, giving you that real CRT feel without the cartridge swapping. Also runs flawlessly on MiSTer FPGA.
