About This Game

Battlefield Play4Free was a free-to-play first-person shooter developed by EA DICE and Easy Studios and published by Electronic Arts, released in 2011 and played through a web browser on Windows PCs. It adapted the large-scale, class-based multiplayer of the mainline Battlefield series, in particular drawing maps and assets from Battlefield 2 and infantry mechanics from Battlefield: Bad Company 2, into an accessible, no-cost package supported by microtransactions. Players chose among classes such as Assault, Engineer, Recon and Medic, fought across sizeable maps with vehicles in modes like Conquest and Rush, and progressed by earning credits to rent or buy weapons, attachments and character upgrades, with premium currency offering faster access and exclusive items. The free-to-play model and persistent unlock systems were designed to bring the Battlefield experience to a broad audience without a retail purchase. The game was part of EA's wave of browser-based 'Play4Free' titles alongside Need for Speed World and Battlefield Heroes. It maintained a dedicated community for several years before EA discontinued it and shut down its servers in 2015, after which it became unplayable. It is remembered as an early experiment in bringing a major shooter franchise to the free-to-play browser space. It followed EA's earlier free shooter Battlefield Heroes, both part of a short-lived experiment in no-cost browser Battlefield games.
