Battlefield 2
Battlefield 2 is a 2005 first-person shooter developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. It is the third main installment in the Battlefield series and the first to be set in a near-future modern warfare context, pitting the United States Marine Corps against the fictional Middle Eastern Coalition (MEC) and the People's Liberation Army of China. The game was released exclusively for Windows on June 21, 2005.
Battlefield 2 expands the series' large-scale multiplayer combat with several new features. It introduces a persistent character progression system that tracks player stats, awards ranks, unlocks weapons, and records medals and ribbons. The signature Conquest mode returns, requiring teams to capture and hold control points, but the game adds a squad system and a commander role. Players can join squads of up to six soldiers, use VoIP or the context-sensitive commo rose to communicate, and spawn on their squad leader. The commander can issue orders, call in artillery strikes, deploy supply crates, and launch UAV reconnaissance.
The game ships with sixteen maps, each supporting up to 64 players online. Single-player mode offers the same maps populated by bots. Classes include Assault, Medic, Engineer, Anti-Tank, Special Forces, Sniper, and Support, each with unique equipment. Vehicles range from main battle tanks and attack helicopters to fighter jets, armored personnel carriers, and rigid-hull inflatable boats.
Upon release, Battlefield 2 received widespread critical acclaim for its ambitious scale, teamplay mechanics, and map design. However, it was also heavily criticized for severe technical issues including frequent crashes, audio driver conflicts, and a sluggish GameSpy-powered server browser. Several major patches later addressed many of these stability problems and balance concerns. Despite its rocky launch, Battlefield 2 is regarded as a landmark multiplayer shooter and a high point of the series.
