ModRetro M64
The ModRetro M64 is an FPGA-based, Nintendo 64-compatible console announced in June 2026 by ModRetro, the hardware company founded by Palmer Luckey. Rather than emulate the N64 in software, the M64 recreates the console's behaviour at the hardware level on an AMD Artix UltraScale+ FPGA, accepting original N64 cartridges and controllers while layering modern conveniences on top. The FPGA logic is built on the open-source N64 MiSTer core originally developed by Robert Peip (FPGAzumSpass), which ModRetro and AMD publicly partnered to bring to the device.
The unit outputs over HDMI at up to 4K, adds Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB-C, and ships in a fanless, passively cooled magnesium alloy chassis. Alongside support for original controllers, ModRetro offers the M64 Pro Controller, which revives the N64 "Trident" shape and swaps the original's drift-prone joystick for a modern TMR (Thumbstick Magnetic Resonance) analog stick, connecting over Bluetooth or wired USB-C.
ModRetro positions the M64 as a direct rival to Analogue's FPGA-based Analogue 3D, the other high-profile attempt to deliver a cartridge-accurate N64 for modern displays. The M64 was given a launch date of 27 July 2026 at an early-bird price of $199 (rising to $229 at standard retail), with an initial slate of four titles: Xeno Crisis, Buck Bumble, Extreme-G Turbo Fusion and Xibalba 64.
