Studio MDHR is shipping a real Sega Master System game
Studio MDHR announced Mighty Cuphead Adventure, an 8-bit platformer programmed in Assembly for the Sega Master System, with a confirmed physical cartridge release alongside modern platforms.
Studio MDHR announced Mighty Cuphead Adventure at Summer Game Fest 2026, and the headline is not that it looks like an 8-bit game. It is an 8-bit game. The studio built it in Assembly language to the actual specifications of the Sega Master System, and a physical cartridge for real Master System hardware is confirmed.

The game is a 2D side-scrolling platformer, a departure from the original Cuphead’s boss-rush design. It supports one or two players locally, features a 32-color palette, and will run on actual 1985 Sega hardware. Modern versions are also coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, but those feel almost beside the point given what the studio is doing on the hardware side.

Studio MDHR also confirmed that a separate hand-animated Cuphead sequel is in early development, though no title, platforms, or release window were shared. Mighty Cuphead Adventure itself has no release window yet. If you own a Master System and want a reason to plug it back in, this is the story to watch.
