Battlecruiser 3000AD is a space simulation game developed by 3000AD, Inc. and published by Interplay. Originally released in 1996, version 2.0 arrived in early 2000 as a substantial re-release that fixed many of the infamous bugs of the original while retaining its enormous scope. Players take command of a massive battlecruiser in a fully simulated galaxy, with the ability to pilot fighters, manage crew, engage in tactical combat, and explore an open universe. The game is notorious for its steep learning curve, lack of a traditional tutorial, and near-total reliance on the player's willingness to read a lengthy electronic manual and memorize hundreds of keyboard shortcuts. Despite dated software-rendered graphics, it offers a depth of systems and player freedom rarely seen, supporting both a scripted campaign and a free-flight sandbox mode. An upcoming sequel, Battlecruiser 3020AD, is expected later in 2000.
