Dead or Alive 2
Dead or Alive 2 is a 3D fighting game developed by Team Ninja and published by Tecmo. Originally an arcade release in 1999, it came to the Dreamcast in 2000 and later to the PlayStation 2, and it is the entry that established Dead or Alive as a major fighting franchise alongside the likes of Tekken and Soul Calibur.
The game is built around a fast counter-and-hold system in which any strike can be reversed with the right timing, encouraging aggressive, momentum-driven play rather than defensive spacing. Its signature feature is the multi-tiered, interactive stage: fighters can be knocked off ledges, through breakable walls, and down to lower areas, where the fight continues, with fall damage and environmental hazards folded into the combat.
Dead or Alive 2 was widely praised at release for its striking visuals, its fluid animation and cloth and hair physics, and its ambitious interactive arenas, which pushed the Dreamcast hardware and set it apart from its peers. It carried a roster drawn from the first game plus new fighters, with characters such as Kasumi, Ayane, and Tina anchoring the series' identity. The game saw several revisions and re-releases across platforms, and is remembered as the title that lifted Dead or Alive into the top rank of console fighters.
