Diablo II is an action role-playing game developed by Blizzard North and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Released in 2000 for Windows, it is the sequel to the 1996 hit Diablo. The game returns to the dark fantasy world of Sanctuary, where players must stop the Prime Evil Diablo from wreaking havoc. Players choose from five character classes, Amazon, Barbarian, Necromancer, Paladin, and Sorceress, each with unique skill trees that allow for deep customization. The core gameplay revolves around real-time combat, exploration of procedurally generated dungeons, and the relentless pursuit of better loot. The game's four acts take the player from the Rogue Encampment to the gates of Hell itself, with an epic, cinematic-driven storyline. The Lord of Destruction expansion, released in 2001, added two new classes (Assassin and Druid), a fifth act set in the barbarian highlands, rune words, jewels, a larger stash, and numerous quality-of-life improvements. Diablo II is renowned for its addictive hack-and-slash loop, cooperative multiplayer via Blizzard's Battle.net service, and a dark, atmospheric art style. Its minimal system requirements and robust netcode helped it become one of the most popular PC games of the early 2000s, and it is widely considered a landmark title in the action RPG genre.
