Grandia
Grandia is a role-playing game developed by Game Arts and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation. Released in North America in 1999, it follows young Justin, who inherits his father's Spirit Stone and embarks on a grand journey beyond the Edge of the World with his childhood friend Sue and the fiery adventurer Feena. The game spans two discs and roughly 80 hours, blending 3D environments with charming 2D sprite characters. Its innovative battle system, the IP Gauge, displays turn order in real time and lets players interrupt enemy attacks, adding a tactical layer unusual for 1990s RPGs. The party dynamic shifts constantly as members join and leave, and the story unfolds through animated cutscenes and campfire conversations that deepen each character's personality. The world is filled with lost civilizations, giant mechanical guardians, and the awe-inspiring Great Wall at the Edge of the World. Despite modest sales, Grandia earned critical acclaim for its heartfelt narrative, vibrant art style, and infectious sense of adventure, and is regarded as a standout of the 32-bit era.
