Guild Wars
Guild Wars is a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by ArenaNet and published by NCsoft in 2005. It sets itself apart with a buy-to-play model that requires no monthly subscription fee, and an instanced world design that emphasizes cooperative and player-versus-player (PvP) combat. Set in the continent of Tyria, the initial campaign follows the human kingdom of Ascalon after a catastrophic event known as the Searing, a brutal invasion by the Charr. Players create a character by choosing a primary profession and adding a secondary profession later, yielding 30 possible class combinations. The gameplay revolves around completing story missions, each a crafted, instanced adventure with scripted events, and side quests. Combat is action-oriented and fast-paced, with a signature eight-slot skill bar that forces careful selection from a large pool of abilities, editable only in town. Health and energy regenerate quickly outside combat, eliminating traditional downtime. Guild Wars features a heavy PvP component, including guild vs. guild battles and competitive arenas. While it lacks crafting, the game was acclaimed for its beautiful, optimized graphics, and it remains an enduring example of how to design a streamlined online RPG.
