Half-Life 2 is a first-person shooter developed by Valve and published by Vivendi Universal Games, released in 2003 for Windows. It is the sequel to the acclaimed Half-Life (1998) and continues the story of scientist Gordon Freeman, who awakens in a dystopian future where Earth has been conquered by a multidimensional alien empire known as the Combine. Set largely in and around the eerily oppressive City 17, the game pits Freeman and a ragtag human resistance against the Combine's soldiers and their alien allies. Powered by Valve's new Source engine, Half-Life 2 introduced groundbreaking real-time physics, high-dynamic-range lighting, and an unprecedented facial animation system that gave its non-player characters a lifelike range of emotional expression. The gravity gun, which allows players to pick up and hurl objects in the environment, became an iconic game mechanic and opened up new combat and puzzle-solving possibilities. The single-player campaign spans roughly sixteen hours of tightly scripted, linear action with vehicle sequences, physics-based puzzles, and memorable set pieces, while the multiplayer component launched solely with Counter-Strike: Source, a Source-engine remake of the original Counter-Strike. Widely praised for its technical achievements and immersive world-building, Half-Life 2 is considered one of the greatest video games of all time.
