Hong Kong Mahjong
Hong Kong Mahjong is a computer adaptation of the classic Chinese tile game Mahjong, specifically the variant commonly played in Hong Kong. Developed and published by Nine Dragons Software in 1999, it brings the centuries-old pastime to Windows 95, 98, and 3.1. The objective is similar to the Western card game Gin Rummy: players collect sets of tiles and aim to arrange their entire hand into valid combinations before their opponents do.
The game features a wide roster of computer opponents, each with distinct personalities and digitized voices, offering skill levels that range from novice to expert. A full set of options lets players customize the experience: blind or random discards, antique or modern tile designs, minimum point thresholds to declare a win, and more. The tiles are faithfully reproduced and look crisp in both 800×600 and 1024×768 screen resolutions, accompanied by a variety of scenic backdrops.
Unlike many commercial releases of the era, the retail package omitted a printed manual, instead relying on an in-game help file that explains the rules and strategies. Installation is straightforward via CD-ROM, though the game does not register itself with Windows and must be manually deleted from the hard drive. The soundtrack is sparse and can be disabled, while sound effects provide basic audio feedback during play.
