About This Game

Max Payne is a third-person shooter developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Gathering of Developers for Windows in 2001. The game follows NYPD detective Max Payne, who is framed for murder and hunted by both the mob and the police after his family is killed. Armed with a gritty narrative told through graphic novel-style cutscenes, a bullet-time mechanic that slows combat, and a stark film-noir aesthetic, Max Payne became a landmark in cinematic action gaming. The game's New York-inspired environments are built with photo-sourced textures, delivering an unprecedented sense of realism for the era. The story, steeped in hard-boiled detective fiction, culminates in a rooftop showdown with the architect of Max's ruin. Though purely single-player, Max Payne received praise for its innovative mechanics and intense atmosphere, spawning a franchise and influencing countless shooters. The Windows version at launch required a 450 MHz processor, 96 MB of RAM, and a 16 MB 3D accelerator.
