MechCommander is a real-time strategy game developed by FASA Interactive and published by MicroProse in 1998. Set in the BattleTech universe, it puts the player in command of Zulu Company, 1st Davion Guards, tasked with liberating the planet Port Arthur from the technologically superior Smoke Jaguar Clan. Unlike traditional RTS titles, MechCommander strips away resource gathering and base construction, focusing entirely on tactical unit management. Players deploy a lance of up to four Mechs and supporting vehicles, outfitting them before each mission with weapons, sensors, and skilled MechWarriors. Success in battle allows the salvage of enemy equipment, which can be repaired and installed to level the playing field against the Clan forces. The game spans five campaigns of six missions each, featuring a deep roster of 18 Mechs and 29 weapon types. Multiplayer supports up to six human commanders via LAN or online services like the MSN Gaming Zone and MPlayer, with extensive setup options and no building phase. Praised for its intense atmosphere, excellent AI, and fidelity to BattleTech lore, MechCommander is remembered as a standout tactical experience that dared to break the mold of its genre.
