Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is a stealth action game developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan under the direction of Hideo Kojima and published by Konami, released for PlayStation 2 on November 13, 2001 in North America and November 29, 2001 in Japan. It is the sequel to Metal Gear Solid (1998) and the fourth mainline entry in the Metal Gear franchise.
The game opens with series protagonist Solid Snake infiltrating a tanker on the Hudson River to photograph a new Metal Gear model, before shifting to a second protagonist, Raiden, for the majority of the campaign set on the Big Shell offshore cleanup facility. The story weaves together themes of information control, identity, memetic legacy, and the nature of digital warfare, and is known for its layered, fourth-wall-breaking narrative that divided players and critics on release.
Gameplay builds on the stealth mechanics of the original Metal Gear Solid with significant additions: first-person aiming, environmental interaction (shooting fire extinguishers, bottles, and structural elements), improved enemy AI with cone-of-vision patrol patterns, and a physics system that tracks details as fine as wet footprints, rain effects on optics, and cloth collision. The game's camera system introduced dynamic cinematic angles during real-time gameplay sequences, blending the boundary between cutscene and player control.
Metal Gear Solid 2 was a massive commercial success and one of the defining titles of the PlayStation 2 library. An expanded version, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, was released in 2002 for Xbox and in 2003 for PC, adding VR missions and supplementary content. The game was later included in the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (2011, PS3/Xbox 360/PS Vita) and the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 (2023, multi-platform). It remains one of the most discussed and analyzed games in the medium for its narrative ambition and its willingness to subvert player expectations.
