About This Game

Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 is a civilian flight simulation developed and published by Microsoft. Part of the long-running Microsoft Flight Simulator series, it builds upon its predecessors with an improved flight model, detailed worldwide scenery, dynamic weather including clouds, fog, and haze, and a selection of aircraft ranging from the Cessna 182 to the Boeing 737-400 and Bell 206B JetRanger. The simulation includes interactive cockpit controls, air traffic control voice communication, and a comprehensive set of flying lessons taught by a virtual instructor. New to this version are Challenges and Adventures, which add goal-oriented missions that provide structure beyond pure free flight. The game supports single-player and multiplayer over the internet. Released for Windows 95/98 and NT 4.0, it requires modest hardware by 1998 standards. The scenery engine, while detailed for its time, shows its age with relatively low-resolution textures and limited landmark detail, but the flight dynamics and systems modeling remain highly regarded. Flight Simulator 98 is considered a benchmark in the series for its balance of realism and accessibility.
