Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a 2011 first-person shooter developed by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games and published by Activision for Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii. The direct sequel to Modern Warfare 2 and the conclusion of the original Modern Warfare trilogy, it picks up immediately after its predecessor as the world is engulfed in a Third World War, following soldiers and operatives across a globe-spanning campaign, through cities including New York, London, Paris and Berlin, as they pursue the Russian ultranationalist Makarov. The game refines the series' hallmark blockbuster set-piece campaign while building out its enormously popular multiplayer with new modes, a Kill Streak overhaul into 'Strike Packages', and the introduction of the cooperative 'Survival' mode within Spec Ops. One of the best-selling games of its era, it shattered entertainment sales records on release and anchored Call of Duty's dominance of the shooter market. Critically it was well received for its polished, relentless action and deep multiplayer, though some reviewers noted the formula's growing familiarity. Modern Warfare 3 capped a hugely influential sub-series whose cinematic spectacle and addictive online progression helped define the modern military shooter, and it remains a cornerstone of the franchise's commercial peak.
