The SMS port of R-Type pushes the hardware to its limits with vibrant colors; despite slowdown, it remains one of the best shooters of the 8-bit era.
About This Game

R-Type is a seminal horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up originally released in arcades by Irem in 1987. Ported to the Sega Master System in 1988, the game tasks players with piloting the R-9 fighter craft to take on the bizarre Bydo Empire. Known for its punishing difficulty and heavy reliance on memorization, R-Type stands out thanks to its unique "Force" device, a detachable pod that can be clipped to the front or back of your ship for varying attack patterns. The SMS port is highly regarded for its vibrant colors and visual fidelity to the arcade original, though it struggles with sprite flicker and significant slowdown during intense action sequences. While the TurboGrafx-16 port is often cited as the superior 8-bit console version, the Master System release remains an impressive technical showcase and one of the best games of its era.

How to Play TodayYour options for running this game in 2026
Original Hardware
Track down the Sega Master System cartridge for the authentic 8-bit experience, but find a controller with a turbo switch to save your hands. The Game Gear port exists but suffers from screen crunch. For the best 8-bit console experience, track down the TurboGrafx-16 HuCard.
Modern Re-release
Available on Nintendo Switch and Steam via the SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics hub. Supports modern save states, which are practically required to see the later levels.
Emulation / Other Options
Runs great on a Mega EverDrive Pro for original Genesis hardware, or via a PC Engine EverDrive if you want the TurboGrafx-16 version on real hardware. MiSTer FPGA also handles both versions flawlessly.
