Red Faction is a first-person shooter developed by Volition and published by THQ, released in 2001 for Windows. The game is set on Mars in the year 2075, where the player takes the role of Parker, a miner caught up in a rebellion against the oppressive Ultor Corporation. Its standout feature is the Geo-Mod engine, which allows real-time destruction of environments: players can blast through walls, dig tunnels, and reshape terrain with explosives and heavy weapons. The single-player campaign spans mines, corporate facilities, outdoor Martian landscapes, a space station, and underwater sections, and includes drivable vehicles and scripted story sequences. Multiplayer supports deathmatch and capture-the-flag, though it suffered from limited servers and network performance issues at launch. Red Faction was praised for its technical ambition and weapon variety, and criticized for uneven enemy AI, occasional scripting bugs, and a mixed final sequence. It spawned a series that continued on consoles.
