Search and Rescue
Search and Rescue is a helicopter simulation game developed by Intense Games and published by Intense Entertainment for Windows 95/98. Released in 2000, it casts the player as a search and rescue pilot, flying 12 real‑world helicopter models across over 40 missions. Missions range from maritime rescues to mountain extractions, with each helicopter possessing unique handling characteristics. The game plays directly from CD‑ROM without installation, though it attempts to force‑install DirectX 5 on first launch regardless of the system’s existing DirectX version.
Visually, Search and Rescue employs 256‑color graphics with terrain rendered as simple green or blue cross‑hatch patterns for land and water, respectively. The cockpit instrumentation is basic, and the external world lacks any meaningful detail. Controls are limited to keyboard, mouse, or analog joystick; digital joysticks are not supported. System requirements call for a 486/66 MHz processor or better (Pentium recommended), 8 MB of RAM (16 MB recommended), a Sound Blaster‑compatible audio card, and a 4× CD‑ROM drive.
Upon release, Search and Rescue was received harshly by critics, who derided its primitive visuals, minimal sound design, and poor control options relative to contemporary flight simulators. The game has not seen any official digital re‑release and remains a collector’s curiosity on original CD‑ROM.
