TERA
TERA (The Exiled Realm of Arborea) is a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by the South Korean studio Bluehole Studio, launched in 2011 in Korea and 2012 in the West for Windows, and later on consoles. Its defining feature is a 'True Action Combat' system that broke from the genre's traditional tab-targeting and auto-attacks in favour of dynamic, aim-based combat: players actively aim attacks with a reticle, dodge enemy telegraphs in real time and chain combos, giving the game a fast, skill-driven, almost action-game feel uncommon among MMORPGs of its era. Set in the world of Arborea, born from two slumbering god-like titans, it offers a colourful high-fantasy setting with a roster of distinctive races and classes, large-scale party content built around its action combat, and the genre's standard dungeons, raids and PvP, including big 'BAM' (Big-Ass Monster) encounters that showcase its combat. Originally subscription-based, it transitioned to free-to-play to grow its audience. Well regarded particularly for its combat, which influenced the broader push toward action-oriented MMO design, and its striking visuals, TERA built a dedicated community and ran for many years. POCG referenced it in coverage of shifting MMO subscription models. It stands as a notable pioneer of action combat in the MMORPG genre.
