Wargame: European Escalation
Wargame: European Escalation is a 2012 real-time strategy and tactics game developed by Eugen Systems and published by Focus Home Interactive for Windows, the first entry in the Wargame series. Set during the Cold War between 1975 and 1985, it imagines large-scale conventional conflicts between NATO and Warsaw Pact forces across European battlefields, and established the series' reputation for authenticity, scale and uncompromising tactical depth. Players command vast armies composed of hundreds of meticulously researched real-world vehicles and units, tanks, armoured personnel carriers, artillery, helicopters, infantry and support, each modelled with realistic capabilities, ranges and vulnerabilities, fought across enormous maps where positioning, reconnaissance, line of sight, supply and morale are decisive. Rather than base-building and resource-harvesting, the game emphasises the deployment and skilful maneuvering of pre-purchased forces, with players assembling custom 'decks' of units from various nations. It features a dynamic single-player campaign and competitive multiplayer. Critically well received, Wargame: European Escalation was praised for its impressive scale, authenticity, sharp visuals and deeply rewarding (if demanding) tactical gameplay, while its steep complexity challenged newcomers. POCG noted a free DLC release. It launched a respected series continued by AirLand Battle and Red Dragon, cementing Eugen Systems' standing in hardcore Cold War wargaming.
