Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is a real-time strategy game developed by Relic Entertainment and published by THQ. Originally released for Windows in September 2004, it brings the grimdark universe of Games Workshop's tabletop wargame to life on the PC. The game features four playable factions: the Space Marines, the Chaos Space Marines, the Eldar, and the Orks. Each race possesses unique units, structures, and abilities, but the core gameplay emphasizes squad-based tactics over mass-unit spam. Resource gathering revolves around capturing and holding strategic points rather than harvesting, encouraging constant territorial conflict. The game's visual style is brutally cohesive, with every environment, unit, and animation dripping with the franchise's signature over-the-top carnage. DoW received critical acclaim for its visceral combat, detailed models, and atmospheric presentation. It spawned a number of expansions, Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, and Soulstorm, as well as a sequel, Dawn of War II, which shifted the focus toward smaller-scale tactical combat. The original game remains a fan favorite for its innovative mechanics and faithful Warhammer 40,000 aesthetic.
