Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is a 2D action platformer developed by Lizardcube and published by Sega, first released in 2025 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. It is a modern revival of Sega's Shinobi series, which began life in arcades in 1987 and ran through a string of console entries on the Master System, Genesis, and beyond.
The game returns to series protagonist Joe Musashi, who finds his village burned to the ground and his clan turned to stone, and sets out on a quest for revenge across a set of hand-drawn worlds. Lizardcube built the game with the same lush, hand-animated art style the studio brought to Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap and Streets of Rage 4, pairing fast, combo-driven swordplay and ninja tools with platforming and boss encounters.
The Shinobi revival sits alongside Sega's wider effort to bring its classic franchises back, and Lizardcube's pedigree with Streets of Rage 4 made it a natural fit to handle one of Sega's oldest action properties. The Deluxe Edition bundles the SEGA Villains Stage DLC, a bonus stage featuring three guest bosses pulled from across Sega's catalogue: Dr. Eggman, Goro Majima, and Death Adder.
The game received a Nintendo Switch 2 release dated for September 24, 2026, with digital and physical editions, making it part of the growing library of boxed Switch 2 titles for collectors.
