Shinobi
Shinobi is a side-scrolling ninja action game from Sega. The original appeared in arcades in 1987 and became the foundation of a long-running franchise. This Vault entry centers on the 8-bit home conversion released for the Sega Master System in 1988, a version many console players encountered before the series moved to the Genesis.
In the arcade game, the ninja Joe Musashi fights through enemy ranks to rescue hostages, throwing shuriken and using a limited supply of ninja magic to clear the screen in emergencies. The Master System port keeps that core loop but reworks the level design for home hardware and changes the hostages to captured children, a notable difference from the arcade version. Boss encounters cap each stage, and reaching a hostage before time runs out is the recurring objective.
The Master System Shinobi was well regarded as a conversion, delivering a recognizable version of a popular arcade title on Sega's 8-bit console at a time when faithful home ports were not a given. It helped establish Shinobi as a marquee action series for Sega.
The franchise continued with Shadow Dancer, The Revenge of Shinobi, and Shinobi III on the Genesis, among later entries. The arcade original has been included in several Sega compilations over the years, while the Master System version is less frequently reissued. Both emulate cleanly, and original Master System cartridges remain available to collectors.
