About This Game

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is a 2D action-platformer developed by Lizardcube and published by Sega, released in 2025. It is a modern revival of Sega's long-running Shinobi series, which began in arcades in 1987 and ran across the Sega Master System, Genesis / Mega Drive, and later hardware, following ninja protagonist Joe Musashi. The game was produced as part of Sega's December 2023 initiative to revive dormant classic franchises, and was the first of those five announced revivals to actually release.

Developed by the studio behind Streets of Rage 4 and Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, Art of Vengeance returns Joe Musashi to a hand-drawn 2D adventure, pairing fluid acrobatic combat and ninja magic with the studio's signature animation. It launched to a positive critical reception across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Its release stood in contrast to the rest of Sega's revival slate, much of which remained in development with titles and dates unconfirmed as of 2026. As the first of the group to ship, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance served as an early signal of how Sega's legacy-IP strategy would translate into finished games.
