R-Type III’s Original Director Calls Out ININ Games Over Remake Quality

R-Type III's original director went public with his concerns about ININ's remake, questioning whether the game should have launched at all in its current state.

The man who directed R-Type III on SNES in 1993 has publicly taken ININ Games to task over the state of R-Type Dimensions III, the remake that launched last month on PC and consoles.

Kengo Miyata identified himself as the original director of R-Type III in a direct message to ININ on X, saying he was “deeply concerned” about the state in which the product had been released. He didn’t stop at expressing disappointment. Miyata questioned the premise of charging customers while continuing quality assurance through their feedback, and suggested that suspending sales, offering refunds, and completing QA properly would be a more honest approach.

The shmup community had already been cataloguing the problems before Miyata weighed in. Hardcore players pointed out hitbox and collision issues, incorrect enemy and weapon behaviors, and wrong sound effects among the complaints. ININ has since announced what it is calling a “comprehensive improvement initiative” and has begun patching the game.

Miyata had previously tried to remake R-Type III himself, approaching Irem directly, but was turned down. Talks with Granzella and Tozai also came to nothing. So when ININ got the license through, he was paying attention. This is what that looks like when it goes wrong.
