Utopia: The Creation of a Nation
Utopia: The Creation of a Nation is a real-time strategy and city-building game developed by Celestial Software and published by Mindscape for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. It is one of the earlier examples of the genre on console hardware and takes a different approach from the period's more prominent city-builders by framing the experience as direct competition between two players.
The game places each player in control of an island colony viewed on a split screen, tasking them with developing infrastructure, managing resources, and keeping a population housed and fed. The competitive element comes from the ability to interfere with the opposing colony through military or economic actions, which shifts the tone from pure city management toward something closer to a strategy duel. A single-player mode against a computer opponent is available, but the game's design is most clearly oriented around the head-to-head format.
Utopia arrived at a moment when the SNES was beginning to attract ports and original titles in the strategy and simulation space, and it shared shelf space with the SNES version of SimCity, which had a higher profile and a more recognizable name. Utopia's split-screen competitive structure gave it a distinct identity, though it found a smaller audience as a result.
The game has been out of print since its original production run ended and has not had an official digital re-release on any modern platform, leaving it accessible mainly through original cartridges on the secondhand market. A new physical release from boutique publisher 33 Games was announced in 2025.
