Battlefield 3 is a 2011 first-person shooter developed by EA DICE and published by Electronic Arts for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. A flagship entry in the Battlefield series, it was the debut of DICE's Frostbite 2 engine, which delivered a major leap in lighting, animation, audio and large-scale destructibility. The single-player campaign follows several characters, chiefly US Marine Sergeant Henry Blackburn, through a near-future story spanning Iran, Iraq, Paris and New York, but the series' heart lies in its multiplayer. Battlefield 3 is celebrated for sprawling 64-player matches on PC built around combined-arms warfare: infantry fight alongside tanks, jets, helicopters and other vehicles across destructible maps, with four classes and an objective-driven mode roster headlined by Conquest and Rush. The return of jets and prone, plus a deep unlock and squad system, deepened its tactical sandbox. Positioned as a direct competitor to Call of Duty, it became a major commercial and critical success, widely praised for its visuals, audio design and scale, though the campaign and the launch-era Battlelog/Origin browser integration drew criticism. Premium expansions including Back to Karkand, Close Quarters, Armored Kill and End Game extended its life, and it remains a fan-favourite high point for the franchise.
