About This Game

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a 2012 side-scrolling platformer developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. Part of the New Super Mario Bros. sub-series that returned the plumber to his classic 2D roots, it follows Mario (and Luigi in co-op) on another quest to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser and the Koopalings, across a fresh set of themed worlds packed with the series' trademark inventive level design. Its defining gimmick is an unabashed obsession with coins: the game showers players in gold, introduces the Gold Flower power-up that turns enemies and terrain into coins, and sets an overarching goal of collecting one million coins across the adventure, a playful spin on the series' classic currency. It also features cooperative two-player play via local wireless, a first for a portable 2D Mario. Critically the game was well received as a polished, enjoyable and accessible platformer, though some reviewers felt it played things safe and lacked the freshness of earlier entries, given its familiar formula. Commercially it was a major success, selling strongly on the 3DS. New Super Mario Bros. 2 stands as a comfortable, coin-stuffed continuation of Nintendo's reliably crafted 2D platforming on its handheld. It sold strongly on the 3DS, underscoring the enduring commercial appeal of Nintendo's reliable 2D Mario platformers.
