About This Game

Mario Tennis Open is a 2012 sports game developed by Camelot Software Planning and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. Part of the long-running Mario Tennis series, it brings accessible, arcade-flavoured tennis to Nintendo's handheld, letting players take to the court as Mario-universe characters, from Mario, Luigi and Peach to Bowser, Yoshi and others, in singles and doubles matches that balance pick-up-and-play simplicity with deeper competitive nuance. The game emphasises its 'Chance Shot' system, coloured markers that appear on the court prompting players to execute specific powerful shots, such as topspin, slice, lob or smash, rewarding good positioning and timing. It also offers gyroscope-based and first-person control options using the 3DS's motion sensor, alongside traditional button play, plus light customisation and amiibo-style 'My Mii' integration that let players compete as their own Mii avatar with unlockable gear. Online multiplayer rounded out its modes for competing against players elsewhere. Critical reception was mixed-to-positive; reviewers praised the solid, accessible tennis mechanics and the Chance Shot system while noting a relatively thin selection of modes and content compared with some past entries. Mario Tennis Open stands as a competent, approachable handheld sports title, offering the franchise's reliable blend of familiar characters and easy-to-learn, harder-to-master arcade tennis.
