About This Game

Final Fantasy XI (also styled Final Fantasy XI Online) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed and published by Square (later Square Enix), first released in Japan in 2002 and subsequently worldwide on PlayStation 2, Windows and Xbox 360, notably as one of the earliest cross-platform MMOs. The first online entry in the mainline Final Fantasy series, it is set in the world of Vana'diel, where players create a character, choose from a deep roster of switchable jobs, and band together to battle through an expansive world shaped by a long-running war among nations and beastmen. FFXI is known for its emphasis on cooperative, party-based play, its intricate job and subjob system, and a famously slow, demanding progression that fostered tight-knit communities. Over two decades Square Enix supported it with numerous expansions, including Rise of the Zilart, Chains of Promathia, Treasures of Aht Urhgan, Wings of the Goddess and the 2013 Seekers of Adoulin, each adding zones, jobs and story. Despite the eventual arrival of Final Fantasy XIV, FFXI maintained a devoted following and continued to receive content updates long after launch, and it is remembered as a landmark MMO that brought the Final Fantasy name into the persistent-online space.
